Accelerated literacy
Kotara School has a strong focus on literacy. Accelerated Literacy (AL) is being implemented across all classes and is found that is doesn’t just teach spelling, vocabulary and grammar but holistically provides a way of learning that students can understand and enjoy.
AL teaches students to challenge the ways they think while providing the essential background knowledge that underpins the meaning of the text. This knowledge is vital in giving the students the skills to decode text and subsequently gain success educationally through understanding.
We have found at Kotara School AL has been able to awaken a sense of the ‘what’, the ‘how’, the ‘when’, the ‘where’, and ultimately the ‘why’, of language choices in a text and increasing student engagement in the learning cycle.
Using AL has provided staff with the framework to empower students to have more control in what they learn.
