Literacy at Kotara School
All students at Kotara School work towards literacy goals that are prescribed in their Personalised Learning Plans. Parents are an integral part of the Personalised Learning Planning process, and these plans are devised by teachers in collaboration with families, health care professionals and other stakeholders in the student’s life.
Kotara School utilises the Daily 5 model of literacy instruction, where students complete routine daily self-paced activities in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities with teacher and learning support officer support where necessary after an initial explicit teaching phase of the lesson which is conducted by the class teacher. All tasks are individualised to the learning support needs of the student. Students participate in regular formal and informal assessments, and the results of these assessments are provided to parents. To supplement this, students also engage in collaboratively programmed mini units (4 weeks in length) based on contemporary texts and multimedia stimuli.
Technology is fully integrated through all learning experiences in literacy at Kotara School, and students regularly interact with highly engaging technological learning platforms including Spelling City, Epic! Readers, SeeSaw, Google Classroom and Studyladder in the course of their learning experiences in literacy.
