Aboriginal Education

Aboriginal Education at Kotara School

At Kotara School, Aboriginal Education and the teaching of Aboriginal cultures are key to our core business. Experiences in Aboriginal culture are available for all students at Kotara School, whether they identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or not. As well as weekly dedicated Aboriginal Education lessons, our students also learn yidaki (didgeridoo) playing, Aboriginal art techniques, and the ancient connections between the Aboriginal people and the land.

As part of our staff, we are very lucky to have our wonderful Aboriginal Education Officer Uncle Perry Fuller. Uncle Perry is a respected Kamilaroi Elder, and the knowledge and wisdom that he brings to our academic and social programs at Kotara School is irreplaceable.

We are also very lucky at Kotara School to have a wonderful bush tucker garden, which was designed and constructed in consultation with Uncle Perry. The garden is teeming with native plants and trees, and the students experience first hand the ancient methods of managing these plants and trees and what medicinal and nutritional purposes that they were used for.
